Travel Safety Tip #1 - Don't Become a Victim: Personal Safety Methods When Travelling Abroad

If you have been watching the news lately, you probably understand that the current world political climate may not provide the friendliest travel atmosphere. In fact, many Westerners might be intimidated by the idea that since they are English or American, they will be met with a certain level of animosity abroad. This, however, is simply not true.

In today's day and age, it is more important than ever for all of us to be more aware and more educated about the fascinating places and incredible people that are found in every corner of the globe. In fact, there is the theory that when we are more open and accepting to the people this world holds, then inevitably those people will be more accepting of who we are.

Whether or not that theory is true, no one should be discouraged from pursuing their wanderlust and experiencing the world. However, the key to doing all of that is not only making sure you pack an open mind, but also making sure you plan for and take responsibility for your own personal safety.

If you educate yourself on how to be a smart traveler, the world is literally your oyster.

Plan As You Pack: Leave the Rolex at Home.

Let's face it, if you are going to explore the Pyramids in Giza, there's no reason to bring your $10,000 Gold Rolex. Pack for the trip you are taking. If you are going to lounge around on a yacht in Monte Carlo, that's one thing, but if you are going to Africa to build houses, that's quite another.

Always understand the place you are going. Now you might be saying, "Well, I don't know anything about the place I am travelling to, I'm going there to learn more." That's all well and good, but an informed traveler is a better traveler and one who will be welcomed by the people native to that country. For instance, if you are a woman and you are going to the Vatican understand in advance that you need to be properly dressed. The Swiss Guard will not let you in if you are wearing shorts and a tank top, you must have your shoulders and legs covered. On top of it, by understanding the rules of the places and countries you are going to you are not only showing courtesy and respect for those particular customs; you are also disguising yourself from being a tourist.

As far as personal safety goes, this is one of the strongest points that can be made. Understand that there are certain characteristics that will "mark you" as a Westerner or even more blatant, as an American, and it can be guaranteed that sloppy t-shirts advertising the beach you went to last summer and the flip flops you are wearing are one of them.

Read about and understand the culture you are traveling to and pack accordingly. Leave items such as flashy jewelry and designer purses at home. Pack clothes that are respectful of the local culture or customs and know your itinerary in advance so there are no surprises.
